How BudTrainer Started

Hi, it's H here. When I started growing my own medicinal plants in 2019, right after legalization, I had no idea what I was doing. The first two years were rough. I broke branches, cut stems with ties, and spent way too much time re-tying plants that never looked the way I wanted. I ended up with big bushes full of leaves and not nearly enough bud. There was plenty of advice online, but most of it just made things more complicated.
I wanted to understand how professionals did it, so I went back to school and completed a post-grad in Commercial Medicinal Plant Production at Niagara College. There I saw what growing at scale really looked like - hundreds of thousands of plants, tested at extremely high levels, all managed with simple, repeatable systems. The biggest lesson was this: commercial growers simplify to save time and money. Home growers should be able to do the same.
I’m a mechanical engineer by trade, with years of design and manufacturing experience, so I started solving my own problems the way I knew best - by designing tools. I knew 3D CAD, bought a 3D printer, and began prototyping gear for my own garden. The first things I made were simple stakes to hold branches. They helped, but the common training clips on the market were still too aggressive. They pinched stems, didn’t stack into a proper 180 bend, and felt like cheap gimmicks.
I went through about ten prototypes before getting it right. Early versions were made from soft rubbery material, but they didn’t hold shape. Moving to a harder plastic with a thinner profile and better curvature changed everything. After testing them on my own plants for multiple cycles, I finally had a clip that guided branches gently instead of forcing them. That design became BudClips®, now the most trusted LST clip in the market.
The goal was never to start a brand. I just wanted tools that solved real problems. I began taking BudClips to local retail stores, and they started reordering right away. Then online growers found them, and the demand kept growing. That’s when BudTrainer really began.
